The stigma of lung cancer

Because many people perceive lung cancer as self-induced -- the result of cigarette smoking -- there is a stigma associated with lung cancer that does not afflict patients with other cancers. At the 2013 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, Medscape spoke with lung cancer expert Joan H. Schiller, MD, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, about her poster presentation on attitudes toward lung cancer vs breast cancer and the stigma associated with a lung cancer diagnosis.
